SFU Advanced Freediving Study / Clinic

Date:

February 24th through May 15th, 2005

Location:

SFU (Simon Fraser University) Vancouver, British Columbia

Overview:

For its fifth year in a row, Simon Fraser University in partnership with the members of Performance Freediving and the Canadian Association of Apnea (CAFA) will be running an Advanced Freediver Research Study starting February 24th, 2005. This program studies non or novice freedivers over a 12-week period measuring their psychophysiological adaptation. This is done in order to aid science in understanding some of the attributes freedivers are able to develop in respects to mammalian diving reflexes and how these psychophysiological adaptations can help the larger public.

This clinic will be conducted by Kirk Krack, Founder and Past President of the Canadian Association of Freediving and Apnea (CAFA) and Coach/Captain of Team Canada; Mandy-Rae Cruickshank, four time world record holder, nine time national record holder and Team Canada member and CAFA President Tom Lightfoot (Team Canada member and Canadian national record holder). Dr. Andrew Blaber of the Simon Fraser University School of Kinesiology in Vancouver, Canada, will be conducting a study of participants involving the Psychophysiological Adaptations and Responses of Novice and Elite Freedivers. The non-invasive research testing may study the following:

The research clinic will run Thursday evenings for twelve weeks and cover both class and pool sessions with weeks seven to twelve including a weekend open water dive component. This clinic is designed to enhance the participants physiological and psychological capabilities along with the techniques required to be a competent and safe freediver. Non-invasive testing will be done on weeks 1 and 12. Advanced Freediver program covers the following:
